cassowary
Dear Ciara,
Since moving to Tropical Queensland, I have been determined to see a cassowary in the wild. Despite visiting multiple sites known for having high populations of them, I hadn’t had any luck. I remember one time, on a trip to the Daintree, we followed the footprints of a cassowary for hours through the scrub. The owner of the footprints unfortunately never revealed himself to us.
Yesterday, my determination was finally met with success. While driving around a secluded bay known for cassowaries, we spotted a large male parading along the side of the road. It was like I had stepped into Jurassic Park—this enormous, brightly-coloured creature with claws larger than my feet—just wandering around on display. We later found some more cassowary tracks on the beach, but couldn’t find the owner. No matter—I am sated.
Today has been less grand. We’ve spent most of the morning cleaning the house and packing for our trip. Admittedly, I’ve been a bit grumpy too. Okay, The Organist would argue I've been very grumpy. I seem to have developed a God-awful sinus infection. My head feels like a balloon ready to burst. Soaking up the sunlight now like a lizard, hoping it will cure my sinus infection. I’ve always believed in the healing power of the sun.
Only a few more days until we are reunited. It has been far too long. What will we talk about. Virgin? The flight? Cassowaries? Our careers? Your balcony garden? My newfound obsession with Vicar of Dibley? Only time will tell.
The song for today is:
Take Me Away - Milan Ring
Short, sharp and sweet. This song always makes me feel good. I'm hoping, like the sun, it will boost my mood.
Love,
The Gardener
